What students need to know to get student jobs
Part time jobs or student jobs have become a popular way for students to some cash. Ok, gathering work experience is a plus factor, but let’s be honest: we’re there for the cash. To earn extra dough, some of us students find student jobs during school break or we look for jobs that allow us to work part time during school days. Another reason we look for student jobs is because we are required by our high school or universities to do some on-the-job training or OJT time which, believe me, can be a very painstaking process.
So what do we do? We spend hours preparing our student resumes, racking our brains for what glowing achievements we can put down in our student resume, and we try to think of what possible skills we have that makes us stand out from the many other students applying for that same job. After which, we submit our student resume either online or personally then bite our nails for the wait that would follow. By the time we are lucky enough to have scheduled an interview, we’re close to becoming a nervous wreck.
So what do we students need to know to get the student jobs we are applying for? Below are some tips.
1. So you’re thinking about getting a student job but haven’t decided what kind. That’s ok. Why not try some volunteer work first to know what kind of work you enjoy? You’ll be able to determine which jobs you dont like and even try to gather some skills you haven’t currently possessed. Also, this is one of the best ways to gather enough work experience which you can put in your student resumes, not to mention that it is also a good way of acquiring contacts and practice your communication skills. This also helps you determine your strenghts and may help you find ways of overcoming you weaknesses.
2. There’s a new pc program that’s really cool and everyone talking about it at school. Why don’t you research about it and give it a try? Go to your school’s computer laboratory and ask your computer professor to teach you how to use it. Or if you own a computer at home, why not browse over the programs installed in it? Have the sense to teach yourself about new things and new skills that you know would come in handy in the long run. When the times comes for you to apply for that student jobs you want, you’ll be able to list these skills and knowledge. Most employers are impressed with students who have the initiative of teaching themselves new stuffs because this not only that you try to keep abreast with new technologies, it also shows you’re very self-reliant and are able to quickly adopt to new software practices.
3. Why are you applying for student jobs? Why this particular student job? You would need to have an answer to these questions. So you need the money, true, but any job can give you that. Employers would want to know why you want the student job they have placed and you better have a good answer for that. To help you land student jobs, it is very important that you show, even in you student resume, that you have the drive to become more. This is what employers look for in students. They look for signs that indicate that the student applying for the job has ambition because ambitious students tend to be more hardworking, more goal driven.
4. The last advice is simple: Just be yourself. Of course you need to be polite, respectful and courteous when you apply for student jobs, but the bottom line is, just be you. You’re a kid trying to find your way in a grown-up world, there’s nothing wrong with that. Even grown ups had to start before. Now its your turn.
